Paesia scaberula - Scented fern, Light fern

Paesia scaberula - Scented fern, Light fern

Harsh stiff highly divided apple-green fronds with the lower surface covered with yellowish glandular hairs. Rhizomes thin long creeping and hairy. Form extensive colonies on sunny hillsides. Vigorous growth once established. Tangly habit.

Common, easy to grow. Delightful scent apparent when dew is touched by the sun.

Farmers dislike this fern because of the way it can invade pasture and stock find it inedible. However, in an ornamentsl garden, we believe it has a place.

The new, lime green fronds in summer make an attractive ground cover border on the edge of a shrubbery as in the main photograph. The spreading rhizomes are relatively easy to control. Semi-deciduous in cooler areas.
