Parablechnum novae-zelandiae - Palm Leaf Fern, Kiokio (Blechnum novae-zelandiae)

Parablechnum novae-zelandiae - Palm Leaf Fern, Kiokio (Blechnum novae-zelandiae)

Coastal to montane. One of the most widespread, abundant and easily recognisable ferns in New Zealand. Widely known by the Maori name “kiokio”, Parablechnum novae-zelandiae is most conspicuous in areas of high rainfall along roadsides, cliff faces, ravines and river banks. It also commonly establishes in pine (Pinus spp.,) plantations and is a common urban “weedy” fern in some parts of the country.

Very hardy. Large drooping green fronds go pink in the sun when new. The longest pinnae are above the middle of the frond and the lower pinnae are markedly shorter and almost rounded at the base.

Great on semi-sunny borders, overhanging rocks or retaining walls to show off the pink fronds in summer.

  • Notes

The large specimen shown in the main photo above, was naturally grown from parent stock that grew on a part of our previous Oratia property. It is quite distinctive with very big and vigorous fronds and the pinnae are very crinkled. The fertile fronds are also vigorous. Since we planted this one in our border in Waipu, others have come up around the property displaying the same characteristics. We have collected spores and have some more coming on that we will keep an eye on!
